Riding for his Angels
by Donald Fetters
You never imagine something tragic will happen to your family.
What if it did? In fact, what if something tragic happened to your children?
For Donald Fetters, this situation was a reality. His twins were involved in a tragic drowning accident in June of 2008. Donald’s daughter, Kayla Marie, died at the scene, but his son, Caleb Michael, survived for 13 days on life support. The pain of losing one child, and having the other pass in his arms was unbearable.Lifeline of Ohio contacted Donald about its program and shared the options of organ and tissue donation with him. This was an ideal opportunity for his family; the chance for the death of his twins to give life to someone else was the only option. Donald said he was grateful for the help and understanding Lifeline of Ohio provided during such a difficult time.
Now, Donald, an avid motorcyclist, and his family organize “Ride for the Angels” every year. It’s a charity ride in memory of Kayla Marie and Caleb Michael. The ride has been extremely successful in the past and all proceeds go to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where Caleb gave the gift of life. Ride for the Angels is on September 5th this year and starts at Thiels Wheels in Upper Sandusky.
“I am talking about organ and tissue donation at my charity ride to increase awareness about the issue, and I believe it will be well-received by my motorcycle friends and family,” Donald said.
