Busy Biker Mom Resumes Active Lifestyle
Michelle Cerone of Webster, N.Y. loved riding her motorcycle. A passion that sprung from years riding with her husband, Michelle started riding her own bike more than six years ago.
In August 2010, Michelle was in an accident that not only threatened her ability to continue riding bikes, but also her role as a working mother.
“I was riding home from work when another motorist failed to yield the right-of-way. The motorist turned left and hit me. Along with a few other broken bones, I found out I needed knee surgery,” she said.
At the time of the Michelle’s misfortune, her life was very busy. “I am married to a sheriff deputy and have two active little boys. At the time of the accident, they were ages one and two. I was working in a cardiology office, I was a paramedic for an ambulance company, teaching CPR and teaching water aerobics classes,” said Michelle.
Michelle desperately needed a solution that would allow her to return to her active lifestyle. Nine days after the accident, Michelle’s surgeon used donated tissue to repair her knee.
“Actually, I did not know I was getting a donation…until I received the donation! I knew nothing and was a bit nervous about it. The doctor told me I had three screws, a plate and tissue in my knee. I couldn’t walk for 2 months,” said Michelle.
“Life has progressively gotten back to normal–whatever that is supposed to be like with a two and a three year old! I can now lift my children again, I can teach my water aerobics classes, I am getting ready to work on the ambulance again soon.”
Michelle is not only able to return to life as an active mom, but can continue to enjoy her motorcycle. She is able to ride on because of her donor. She hopes to one day leave a similar legacy.
“I would like to say that I myself am an organ donor chose to be one about 20 years ago. I was never aware however, that tissue was included. When it is my time to go, I can only hope that I am fortunate enough to offer the same gift someone has given me, the gift of life.”
