Organ and Tissue Donation Statistics:
- The national waiting list for organ donation is rising at the alarming rate of a new name every ten minutes, with 99,235 people currently on the list (8/15/08);
- In 2007, 28,357 individuals received a life-saving organ transplant thanks to the generosity of a donor;
- An average of 19 men, women, and children die each day waiting for an organ transplant; in 2006, there were 7,114 people who died waiting;
- In Ohio, approximately 2,800 people are waiting for an organ transplant at any one time, and hundreds more await tissue transplants;
- In Central Ohio, approximately 650 people are waiting for an organ transplant at any one time;
- In 2007, 211 Ohioans died waiting for a transplant - about one individual every other day;
- More than 1 million people benefit from tissue transplants each year;
- In 2007, Lifeline of Ohio recovered organs from 98 donors and tissue from 323 donors;
- A single tissue donor can improve the quality of life for more than 50 people;
- More than 95 percent of American adults approve of donation as a viable, life-giving practice.
Nationally, a total of 99,235 patients were waiting for a transplant as of August 15, 2008. Following is a list by type of transplant needed:
- 76,473 patients waiting for a kidney transplant
- 16,141 patients waiting for a liver transplant
- 1,577 patients waiting for a pancreas transplant
- 2,269 patients waiting for a kidney-pancreas transplant
- 229 patients waiting for an intestine transplant
- 2,658 patients waiting for a heart transplant
- 97 patients waiting for a heart-lung transplant
- 2,137 patients waiting for a lung transplant
