National Donor Sabbath 2009

November 15, 2009

National Donor Sabbath offers the perfect opportunity to educate your congregation about the drastic need for organ and tissue donors, as well as your religion’s beliefs and traditions about sharing the “Gift of Life.”  The reasons to support donation are staggering:

  • Over 102,000 Americans are waiting for a life-saving transplant.  Thousands await a healing tissue transplant.
  • Nearly 3,000 Ohioans are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.
  • 18 men, women, and children die each day in the U.S. because the necessary organs were not available to meet this need.

A single donor can save the life of up to eight people by donating vital organs (heart, two lungs, two kidneys, liver, pancreas and small bowel) and heal up to 50 more by donating tissue (eyes, bone, fascia, skin, tendons, ligaments, veins, nerves and heart valves).

“My religion does not support donation” is one of the most commonly cited reasons why people say “no” to donation.  By participating in National Donor Sabbath you can reaffirm your support for donation in your congregation.  Additionally, studies indicate that people seek advice from their religious leader about the organ and tissue donation decision process.

We invite you to join us in the season of Thanksgiving during your worship services, November 13-15, 2009 or any time of the year by sharing the importance of the “Gift of Life.”

If you would like to participate either the weekend of November 13-15th or at any other time during the year, please contact Lauren Fitting, Community Outreach/Partnership Coordinator at 1.800.525.5667 ext. 333 or at lfitting@lifelineofohio.org
